I'm in Greenland!!!!!

Greetings from Greenland! Today has been a fabulous day. I took a taxi from the AirBnB to the domestic airport and met the Greenland tour group – 5 of us and our leader Jan (pronounced “Yen”). A couple from New York City: John and Sheila, and a couple from Australia (somewhere north of Sydney): Rick and Angela, and me. Jan said the tour was almost cancelled due to the low number of participants, but they decided to allow the trip to go. Whew – dodged a bullet there.

You may be wondering, why Greenland? I've been wanting to come here for about 5 years. Every time I flew to or from Europe I would see the south tip of Greenland and wonder what it would be like to visit there. Then my friend Ellen tells me about kayaking in Greenland, and I knew I wanted to go.

The flight to Greenland was mostly ocean, ocean, ocean – then the continent of Greenland. Absolutely beautiful. It’s like Alaska but on a much bigger scale. HUGE glaciers and mountains.

We arrived in Narsarsuag, which is in the south of Greenland. It’s a small village of about 160 inhabitants, and about 20,000 sheep. There used to be a U.S. base here during WWII, and many of the former barracks have been converted to hotel rooms. Also, the time zone changed. In Iceland I was 7 hours ahead of California, now I’m 5 hours ahead. This should help with my jet lag.

After we checked into our hotel we went for a walk to Signal Hill, with communication apparatus on top. The U.S. base discontinued being used in the 50’s, but lots of “stuff” is still here. There were lots of nice flowers on the hike, and great views of a glacier and some peaks.

We had a fabulous dinner of halibut appetizer, lamb main course, and crème brulee dessert.

Tomorrow we get on a boat and go to some small villages, the site where Erik the Red supposedly settled (after he was exiled from Iceland for murder). More stories tomorrow.
