With nothing definitively planned for today, we slept in a bit and took our time getting ready. Kasteel Maurick in Vught was our first stop today. Nestled in a beautiful wooded area only meters away from the centre of Vught, this castle played a significant role during the 80-year war with Spain when Den Bosch was under siege. Today, it is not open as a castle, but is rented out for functions and events. However, the grounds are open to the public so we wander around and took some photos before we stopped at the restaurant for, just guess, coffee and dessert.

We had been told that the St. Petrus church in Vught would be worth a visit, since it’s conversion to a community centre just recently. The church had sat empty for 15 years and needed much work inside and out. One of the volunteers told me local citizens did not wish to have it torn down, so they paid for the interior restoration, with other levels of government picking up the tab for the outside work. There is now a library taking up most of the room, but also a small café, reading areas, visual presentation areas on

Vught’s history, several old trades exhibits, and a World Church store, any profits of which are distributed to worthwhile projects in developing countries. And there was no entry fee!

Since it was not quite warm enough to go swimming at the IJzeren Man, we decided to take the few minutes drive to Den Bosch for a walk and some shopping. It being Monday, not all stores were open but we got our exercise for the day. We finished off our day with a visit to my youngest sister.
