Olden
Tish eating some breakfast tucker on the Spey Restaurant balcony We arrived in Olden and anchored in the harbour which means we needed to take a tender to shore for the first time. On arriving onshore, we boarded a coach which took us on a 50 minute trip up the fiord valley, through Olden to our destination for the day - Briksdal Glacier. After undertaking two long hikes the previous two days, we were both feeling the lead in our legs so we were glad to hear that today’s hike to the glacier was only 2.5 km but judging from what we say, we would have hiked another 10 km for sure. The walk to the Glacier was along a raging river and waterfalls directly from the glacier head along a steep valley. The scenery was simply stunning and the water in the river and lake was ice cold.
The glacier began retreating in 1760 and the head of the glacier has retreated up the valley more than 1 km over that time. Our experience on the glacier walk has been a highlight of the cruise so far and we had sunny weather all the way. After cake and coffee in the cafeteria we boarded our coach for the return
Olden
Catching the Tender for the first time trip to Olden and only had a brief time to meander around the wharf area before returning tp the ship for a 4:30 pm departure. Entertainment for the evening was a flutist / guitar duo playing a range of music genre’s including a tribute to the Beatles. After dinner, we were up on deck cruising past near vertical peaks with the highest peak more than 8 times higher than the white cliffs of Dover and came with a great story about a Viking king who scaled the peak around the year 1000 AD and planter his shield on top.
We are close to our most northerly location on this cruise which means there is always light in the sky 24 hours a day so we spent the evening out on deck taking in the views of the Nordjford Fiord with its glass like water and numerous islands and small villages. the sun didn’t set until after 10:30 pm so we were visited by a drone operated from shore and at midnight, there was a jet skier buzzing around the wake of the ship. These guys have an amazing amount of old daylight at this time of year but I
