Mass grave sitesMass grave sitesMass grave sites

Kate "taking in" the mass graves. A total of 129 were found with only 86 being searched as the others are floaded. Most people in this extermination camp were interlectuals from PP.
hello everyone. m was getting cross because i never write the blog ( only because it takes me so long to type - i do always sit next to him when he does it ) hope all well at home and that the frost is not nipping toes yet. boiling hot here in the capitol even at 10pm. we saw the king today - it wasvery exciting, sad thing about it is that it was mainly tourists along the side of the road - he looked quite handspme actually, even waved at us - m had forgotten the camera though. spent ages racing around in a tt trying to send a mammouth parcel (10kg or a quarter of our initial weight !)home full of stupid clothes that we will never wear in this heat.

visited the killing fields thismorning. it was very harrowing but essential to visit as it forms such a huge part of recent cambodian history. quite horrid to be walking over mass graves spilling their contents of bones, teeth and clothes. the memorial tower houses 9000 skulls that have so far been found - many of the mass graves have not been searched at all. a restfull
bones and clothesbones and clothesbones and clothes

Littered all around the grave sites are human bones and clothes worn by the people executed. Odd that you can walk over then and that they are inbedded in the ground for all too see.
place now though with hundreds of butterflies everywhere. - makes you wonder whether the thing about butterflies being the souls of the dead is true.

the city has not really grown on us much, v dusty, lots of pestering from tuk tuk guys and lots of begging. sad i know but when you are hot and sweaty and cannot see for the blinding sun it becomes quite anger inducing. spent the evening in the retreat of the fcc ( foreign correspondants club) - balcony high up from the street so no pestering, breezy and fab view of the river and some v good fireworks as is their independence day . drank g&t, ate western food and chilled out. just need to run the gauntlet back to hotel now - different one to last night as it was a cockroach infested, stained towels, yellow bed sheet sort of place - delicious!

heading out of this town tomorrow at 6 am on a 6 hour bus trip with no toilet to vietnam - looking forward to that! actually will be good to move on and see what nam has to offer.

take care and wrap up warm. big

just a few of the nearly 9000 skulls disintered by searches. Note the bottom left one still shows the axe mark inflicted on the individual. Quite chilling viewing.

The capitol from an upstairs bar. The Mekong river is seen. Shame that raw sewage flows into it giving it a pleasant aroma!

Not sure how I did this but like it anyway. Sitting upstairs in the foreign correspondants club.

Busy Rats
Good day overseas comrades. My what a delicious time you are having, I think perhaps if Alice secures a small fortune in diamond smuggling we could fly from here to meet you and share in some spring rolls and large beers. Have fun and enjoy as much unidentifiable meat as is possible. Christophé - turning slightly french.
