June 6, 2018 Today we sang our 2nd concert, but before I get to that I'll talk about what we did in the morning.
We had a tour of the Uffizi Museum. From Wikipedia:
The
Uffizi Gallery (
Italian:
Galleria degli Uffizi, pronounced
) is a prominent
art museum located adjacent to the
Piazza della Signoria in the
Historic Centre of Florence in the region of Tuscany, Italy. One of the most important Italian museums, and the most visited, it is also one of the largest and best known in the world, and holds a collection of priceless works, particularly from the period of the
Italian Renaissance. After the ruling
house of Medici died out, their art collections were gifted to the city of Florence under the famous
Patto di famiglia negotiated by
Anna Maria Luisa, the last Medici heiress. The Uffizi is one of the first modern museums. The gallery had been open to visitors by request since the sixteenth century, and in 1765 it was officially opened to the public, formally becoming a museum in 1865.
Today, the Uffizi is one of the most popular
tourist attractions of Florence and one of the most visited art museums in the world. The building of Uffizi complex
was begun by
Giorgio Vasari in 1560 for
Cosimo I de' Medici so as to accommodate the offices of the Florentine magistrates, hence the name
uffizi, "offices".
The place is amazing and has a priceless collection. After this I walked around trying to find a clothing shop that has a glass floor so you can see the Roman Ruins below. I did find it - see photos.
We had rehearsal at 15:30 with the orchestra and soloists, and it didn't go so well. Our performance that night went really well. Peter Tiboris finally conducted us in a way we could interpret (contrary to what he did in rehearsal), and the audience loved it. However, the soprano soloist was a bit much. Stan Wicks (our choir director) described her singing as the sound that come out of a cat being picked up by its tail. No kidding, that's what he said. The other 3 soloist were great, but when all 4 of them sang the soprano was so loud that is all you could hear. By the way, the soprano is Peter Tiboris' wife. Enough said.
I didn't celebrate afterwards because we have to pack up & move to Verona
tomorrow.
