Santee to Brunswick

Travels with Snowbirds 2018, Santee State Park to Golden Isles RV Park, Brunswick,GA.

The one about asking for prayers

Shit, it was cold last night. Something about being inside a metal box when it’s very hot or very cold. Nasty. I went to bed under my down comforter, wearing my cotton hat, my fuzzy socks, and electric blanket on top. The covers were so heavy on me I couldn’t move, but I was warm. I woke up in the middle of the night sweating. I got rid of the electric blanket and the hat and slept on until 7:30. Temperature 30 outside, 42 inside.

I walked Winston quickly, broke camp, which consisted of putting my steps away, unplugged electricity and hit the road by 8:30. I pointed south towards Pooler, Georgia, and the large Walmart and a large Camping World there.

Bringing you up-to-date. We heard on Wednesday that my step mother, Shirley, was in very poor health. She’s 96 years old, God love her, and not doing well right now. I ask you all to please say a short prayer and think kind thoughts that she is peaceful.

My daughter, Kristine, and Shirley have always had a strong bond as they share the same birthday. It’s kind of been a running joke between them. Today, Friday, the news was not encouraging. Kristine took her family of four, plus a friend of Maggie‘s, also named Maggie, Louis’ sister, Michelle, and her son, Peter, to spend the weekend with Michelle‘s boyfriend at his house 10 minutes away from the nursing home where Shirley is. Trouble is the temperatures of -2 with the windchill somewhere around -20°.

Trouble is the temperatures is -2 with the windchill somewhere around -20°. This group is always up for an adventure, and I expect this weekend, sad as it is, will provide lots of stories.

I continue to head south, waiting to hear news and make a decision about my plans.

At Walmart I bought a few groceries, a leash for Winston, a small fire hydrant shaped plastic container to hold poopie bags that attaches to the leash, a $21 Bissel corded stick vacuum that got many 5 star reviews, and a small mat to put under Winston’s water. I checked out computer chargers, $50, nope, passed that by. At Camping World I bought a lock for my surge protector.

I love driving through Georgia. The terrain changes to the low land marshes which are beautiful to me when brown in the winter. This year the RVs heading south, and the blue hairs in their big Crown Vics also heading south far outnumber the log filled trucks. Traffic bogged down again for about 30 minutes due to a multi car fender bender. Police activity was high; many speeders were pulled over.

Thank goodness I called ahead to the campground I intended for the evening, as I got one of the last sites. This place is always empty, it’s not the nicest place, it’s convenient and cheap. My site backs up to the bathhouse. There are many big rigs with license plates from the north.

I heard from camping girlie, Ginnie, who is also headed south. Right now she is about 50 miles ahead of me in a Walmart parking lot because she could not find a campground with an available site. Florida is going to tip into the ocean with all the weight from those fleeing the north! She is in her new RV, and I am anxious to see her and it. We will connect towards the end of January.

It’s not as cold here as it was last night, and there is no wind. Tomorrow I head to my campground in Bushnell, FL for 10 days, and await Winston’s license tags. What to do about a laptop charger. I did fire the machine up tonight, and backed up my trip documents and quicken data to the cloud. Maybe I will find someone who will let me borrow their charger to charge the battery.
