Note to self; If you are planning to visit a Museum, check the LP guide for its opening hours! Today I had intended to do some Museum hoping starting at the Benaki, then the Cycladic Art museum then up to the Acropolis Museum. Turns out the Benaki and Cycladic are closed on Tuesdays. Couple that with my failed visit to the Acropolis Museum yesterday and that's 3 for 3. So I went for a walk through the National gardens. I was on the way to the Acropolis Museum so I figured two birds, one stone. Except I got lost again, exited the wrong gate and ended up back at the Panathenic stadium. Couple more happy snaps and then the long walk back to the Acropolis. It didn't take long before I decided to gamble on the Public transport system again. One tram, one bus & a train later I was where I wanted to be...walking may have been easier
The museum was awesome. Lots of statues and friezes, and info panels on the history of the acropolis. It must have been magnificent back in the day. Such a pity it has been pillaged, blown up & defaced by almost every
Syntagma Train Station
Even the train stations have friezes invader of Athens. Even our wonderful Christians who removed the images of the old Gods and then used it as a church. I couldn't take photo's in the Museum so I'm afraid I cant show you much beside the entrance. The entrance is built over more ruins but they have put in glass floors so you can view it while you walk over it. Which is both cool and a bit unnerving.
After the museum I walked back into town (without getting lost once - yay me!) and stopped for a refreshing Sangria. Then I visited a Coptic church, which wasn't that special because it was being renovated, but I still got some happy snaps of some rich religious art. After that I decided it was time for some downtime. I returned to my hotel to freshen up, took my complimentary bottle of wine to the roof and enjoyed the view.... Relax folks it was only a pint sized bottle. After that I took myself off to the little tavern by the Roman Agora I found last night
So on my last night in Athens I'm sitting at my new favorite Tavern, as I'm writing down my memories
I'm drinking a beer (yes Jen, another beer, its thirsty work walking around Athens) a Canadian woman walks up snapping photos of the agora. We start talking, as travelers do, she's a solo traveler as well. So we sat and had dinner and drinks together. It was good to have some company. She had quite a sad story to tell, having lost her daughter earlier this year, but she was amazingly strong. My heart really went out to her.
One thing about Athens which has surprised me is how musical the city is. Every street I walk down in Plaka has a busker, or a restaurant with a acoustic band. Quite often traditional Greek music (Zorba!) but sometimes a bit of classic rock. It adds a wonderful warm feeling to the city. Sometimes I feel like I'm in a movie, especially when I heard one busker playing the godfather theme....yes I know I'm in the wrong country but still felt pretty magical. I am sad to be leaving Greece. I wish I had more time. Shall have to come back one year for a trip around the Greek isles. :-)
