What comes first .... Travel or Photography??
Had the same delima before my trip. I purchased a camera bag big enough to hold a Nikon 200, two zoom lens, and all of the small accessories; i.e. flash cards, light meter, flash, etc. The camera bag fit neatly in the outer backpack compartment and my laptop in the large compartment. The backpack became a part on my anatomy and went wherever I did so I was always ready to capture a moment or scene; dinner, walks, work. if I was shooting the camera bag was strapped over my shoulder. My concern was safety as well as full shooting capabilities. This worked very well for me.
Reply to this An "almost DSLR" like the one I have is my choice. I get full manual
control, enough megapixels and a good zoom + don't have to carry too much
stuff around which is nice for those treks into villages, hills etc. I wouldn't have time
to change lenses anyway, as my best shots are almost always unplanned. Something
interesting happens, you have to be ready and just shoot or the moment is gone.
However, A tripod is a must for those sunrise / sunset / night shots as is remote
shutter control.
