Any suggestions on going about buying a car for/while traveling?

I'm thinking of buying a car once I get to Mexico and driving it around, pretty much until the wheels fall off or until I'm out of funds. Any suggestions about how to go about it? Good or bad experiences you have had? Would you consider it more expensive?
