Hi,

I am a young Canadian female who is planning on traveling across Canada this summer, beginning my trip in Ontario. I am going to travel by Greyhound and stay in hostels. I plan on traveling for roughly 15 days. I am pretty frugal with my money, but would like to see if anyone else has done a similar trip and could help approximate how much my travels may cost me. I am also interested in any suggestions on what to see or do across Canada (except for Ottawa, since that is where I'm from!), as well as any beneficial tips for a first time solo female traveler!

Thank you! Reply to this

Hey! I stayed in a really nice little hostel in Whitehorse. There wasn't much to see in the Yukon at the end of August, but it was a cute little place!! I highly recommend the hostel too -- the Jekyll on Hyde Street or something like that. It was pretty cute and the people were awesome!! Reply to this

Calgary is great during July - Stampede! It is ten days long, and it starts on the first Friday of July and runs through until a Sunday later. It really is the best time to be there because all the oil-lovin' workaholic Calgarians flood out of the office towers for ten days to blow off steam and party. The Stampede hosts the world's biggest rodeo and best parties of the year, kind of like the Oktoberfest of Canada.

That said, it is more expensive during the actual Stampede itself, so if you are on a really tight budget I would suggest coming the week before Stampede when everybody is anticipating the events and still in a great mood. The hotels/hostels will be cheaper, but nonetheless you need to make reservations in advance because there will be a lot of tourists.

After that, head more north to Canmore and Banff to see some of the best mountain scenery in the world. Lake Louise is great too.

Good luck with your trip. Reply to this

g'day, me and a mate plan on doing the cross canadian trip but from west coast to east coast in september instead

the plan is
starting in vancouver(will go out to victoria for a few days)
then a bus to shuswap where ill be meeting mates from calgary
then catching a lift back to calgary with them
then a mate from saskatoon is meeting us in calgary to hang out for abit then we are catching a ride back with him to saskatoon and from there it looks like we will have to get a 2 day bus ride to montreal then back in toronto and out to london

the greyhound bus ride seems to be the cheapest compared to flying which is ridiculously expensive

looking forward to it 😊 Reply to this

SO many beautiful places to see!

My advice is based on your method of transportation: Make many stops and take many breaks from the bus. Travelling across the country via Greyhound is very uncomfortable if it's done in one shot. In fact, I don't recommend being on a bus for more than 2 hours! Besides, they will most likely take you across the Queensway and will stop in many beautiful cities along the way. I recommend stopping in every city and seeing what it has to offer. Half the adventure is the discovery!

This will give you frequent breaks from the bus, lots to do and lots to see, and ample opportunities to meet really cool people.

From Ottawa going west, I'd plan my trip this way: Missisauga, Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Calgary, Nelson, Kelowna, Vancouver, Nanaimo.
Then on the way back, I'd go back to the places I liked most during that trip and revisit people.

BTW... Caitlin from Ottawa... Same Caitlin I know? Red hair?

Ash (from Ottawa)
(if you're having trouble figuring out which Ash, I'm the one that was always coming and going from and to all sorts of Canadian cities in all directions and tended to congregate with friends on Major's Hill) Reply to this
