Reply to this Depends on what you want. My ideas of the cities are:
San Francisco: Temperature is mild year round but usually overcast. A very liberal and a very cosmopolitan city though it is much smaller than say New York City. Great for the arts and restaurants. It's kind of like a small New York but milder temperature. Good public transportation system.
Los Angeles: Very large obviously and as such pretty diverse. Parts of it very liberal and artsy, other parts more conservative and then there are the more seedy parts of town. Very sunny, rarely rains and the pollution is not as bad as its reputation but its traffic is worse. Overall more laid back than SF or SD. Has a reputation for being shallow, but I completely disagree. The main operative word is diversity. Main drawback for a student, very poor public transportation system. You pretty much need to drive here.
San Diego: Great weather. Smaller and thus not as congested as the other two. Very fun town to be in, but also the most conservative of the three. Basically, its Middle America but with California weather. Best thing about it IMO, it's close to the Mexican town of Tijuana where you can really part, but with a student visa, it's a no go for you.
Everyone has there personal preference and feel pretty strongly that theirs is right. Mine is LA best, SF second, SD last.
Reply to this Depends on what you want. I've never been to San Diego so I can't comment on that one, but San Fran is probably my favorite American city. It has a lot to offer around the Bay Area, has some great food, and there are a lot of day trips you can take like to the wine valleys and up and down the coast to Big Sur and Mendocino. Between San Fran and LA, SF seemed to have a bit more culture... but maybe that's because it's not as spread out as LA is and it's easier to run into a lot of things in a short period of time.
That being said, if you want summer in the US, and want to hit up the beaches, Hollywood, and palm trees... go to LA. As said above, it's a diverse place and there's a lot of potential for some good, American fun in the many clubs and bars around. You can take day trips to other places too, but I don't think they are as exciting as the places around San Francisco. 😊
Good luck, and hope you have a good summer!
