Hi,
I haven't done it by bike, but by car. I would recommend going up the eastern side of the island (I assume you are entering through Victoria, or Sanich rather), and then take the ferry at Comox over to Powell river and bike down the Sunshine coast. There is a reason they call it that, and the ferry rides offer some of the most beautiful scenery. You would be biking along some beaches, and the ocean most of the time. While on the island, you won't miss the compulsory visit to Victoria, of course, then if you head to the Duncan area there are interesting spots on the way, like in and around the little town of Chemainus. Most people would probably suggest to check out the West coast of the island, which has 2 small towns - Ucluelet and Tofino. While everyone raves about Tofino, and yes, it has beautiful nature, there are no walking trails, so I assume same goes for biking, and if you want to really do any activities you have to pay through your nose to go boating or on a plane ride. It is a very expensive area. Ucluelet is better, nice trails and beaches. If you do decide to go there, there is one thing to consider - there is only one road to go there and back, no other options, and by car that highway took 3 or 4 hours one way. It is scenic, but it can rain and in that case you don't get to see much. And there is nothing in between, really, except the one thing you SHOULD check out. It is only a couple km into that highway on the Port Alberni trail (that is also a nice town to check out), and it is the Cathedral Grove rainforest. Some big trees there! And like I said, the Sunshine coast is very scenic and I think would make a very nice bike ride along the coast down to Vancouver.
Well, guess that's all I've got to say about the island. Hope you have a good time! And post some pictures if you can. 😊

I'm a scotsman, now resident in BC, Canada. Vancouver Island & Nova Scotia are two areas I am very keen to see in the next year or two, so I'm very interested to hear experiences travellers have had in both parts of Canada.

Thanks 😊

Hi Karl and Emma. I'm from Vancouver Island, and I would agree with dialectgirl on the places to visit. I haven't biked it, only by car. I was in Ucluelet just last week for the first time and it is very beautiful. However, it is only one road in and out, but very beautiful scenery with lakes, hills and plenty of big trees in Cathedral Grove. I think her route is a good option. Keep in mind you'd be traveling on kinda busy highway... you won't be without cars. Reply to this
