My friend lives in Toronto and he spends 3-4 months each year in China. One of the problems he has is finding a reasonable place to stay for less than a month. I am starting a site to collect information about homestays in China.
It is always cheaper and more interesting to stay with locals in any country. While it is possible to find free accomodation by seeking out some friendly souls on the internet, it is more practical to find someone who wants to rent rent out a spare room.
The traveller has access to a local, usually someone who knows some English and is eager to make foreign friends.
