USA Road Trip; CA to FL to NY

I would like to get some more information and tips about a roadtrip I will be making across the USA during the summer.

Hi all,

I am an exchange student that has been studying in California for half a year. My school will end mid-June, at which point I will be making a road trip across the US together with my younger brother (18 years old). I have bought a car here (Ford Explorer) and will be using this to make the trip and we will most likely sleep in the back of the car on some air-mattresses (It\\\'s big enough).

We will leave from San Diego around the 30th and are planning to travel through the southern states (CA, AZ, NM, TX, LA, MS, AL, FS) towards Jacksonville. If there is time we might check out Miami or Orlando. Then we will head up along the coast up to New York, where we will spend a few days to arrange the shipping of my car.

For the more precise planning I need some help. What highway should we take in the southern states, the 10 or the 20? What are some nice places to visit or pass through? How long should a trip like this take? We have set out 2.5 weeks. Is that doable? During the 4th of July we will be somewhere around Texas/Louisiana/Mississippi. What is the best way to spend that national holiday?
We are basically two guys of ages 18 and 19 and want to see and experience the US culture. Even driving for hours through deserts and eating at roadside restaurants sounds great! Additionally, we are both highly interested in American cuisine. If you know any places that are worth visiting along the 8, 10, 20 or 95 please let us know!

Is it safe sleeping in a car? Is it legal? How much are motels? Is there phone reception along the way? Is there anything essential to bring along (like spare gas)? Anything else we should know or keep in mind?
If anybody has any other comments, suggestions or information I would love to here it!

Thanks,

This might be to late, but if at all possible join AAA!! They are invaluable in the US and will tow your car, fix a flat, and even get you discounts at diners and motels. Good Luck! Reply to this
