Heading out of LA.... any suggestions of wacky, random or just cool adventures??
19 years ago, March 11th 2005 No: 1 Msg: #1411
I have already been to Vegas and the Grand Canyon (although I WAS 14 at the time!!), this time I am thinking of heading to Vegas, via. Rancho Mirage (betty ford clinic).. then on to Rachel (via. the Extraterrestrial Highway) and to stop by Area 51..

Then on to Death Valley, and Cholame (Californian Coast).. Cholame is where the monument to James Dean is...

From there I am heading to San Diego for a week...

I am only in the States for two weeks, but does anyone have any suggestions of anything I should consider visiting??

And any advice on the cheapest and most effective way to load pics onto the journal? ie. do i take laptop..load pics onto it..load them onto disc..take to an internet cafe..? Or does anyone know if you can take your digital memory card to a cafe and they can load them?? Reply to this

Ok - a bit of brainstorming here 😉

Yosemite national park is one of the most amazing places I've ever been, a 10hr hike is from Yosemite village to the top of half-dome and back - some of the most impressive views you'll ever see. There are hostels just out side of the park you could stay in if budgeting.

San Diego you could take a day trip to Tjiuana, Mexico - it's possible to get there by tram from SD. Ok - it's not a nice place! but it's interesting, full of the worst of Mexico... it was my welcome to Mexico experience and believe me it got so much better.

Bryce Canyon is also amazing - but that's in Utah...

San Francisco is one of my favourite cities in the world... so different from LA.

Are you renting a car?

For the photos question see: this thread

Thanks!!!

During my last visits I was fortunate enough to get to Mexico, and also San Fran... but THANK YOU! you jogged my memory, someone told me about half dome!! apparently it is insane (I climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge for work) and a climber told me if I was into outdoor adventure I had to go to Half Dome...

Sure am hiring a car... Mustang (you gotta dont you if you are in the states??).. I guess my main problem is time. I only have a week for the road trip, is that manageable to get to Yosemite and back from LA?? Reply to this

Car in the states - needed? - of course 😊 I did meet people trying to get around on the Greyhound...

Well it's about 9hrs (I think!) drive each way... if you're sharing the driving that's doable... maybe see some other things on the way and stay a night nearby. I'm sure there will be lots of suggestions from locals soon.

BTW - spotted and tidied up the other threads 😊 Reply to this

A loop that takes you up the back (east) side of the Sierras and brings you back via Highway 1 from Monterey to San Luis Obispo will give you some outstanding scenery.

If the high passes (Sonora and Tioga) are open they are a much more scenic way to cross the mountains as opposed to the multi-laned Donner Pass.

Regarding the James Dean Memorial, although the memorial is in Cholame, the actual accident happened up the road on hwy 46, in Shandon.

I have a picture of the JD Memorial posted here:

Also, if you're going to be in Cholame, you might be interested is taking the "Sideways" tour and visit the wine country in Santa Ynez Valley, such as the Firestone Winery. Also, in Paso Robles there's a several wineries too.

And since you'll be in Central California, check out the coastline. In San Simeon, you can see herds of Elephant Seals nesting on the beach. And there's Hearst Castle.

While is San Diego, check out La Jolla Coves and WindnSea Beach. I posted pics of La Jolla at the URL below.
