Hi,
From my experience, all travel agencies that I've tried in Vietnam was quite disappointing unless that you had chosen a customized tour.
I would suggest to gather information by yourself and do it yourself. It is much cheaper and you'll have more freedom.
visit a very good website about Vietnam: www.travelfish.org

Hi everyone,

I was surfing for information about Vietnam when I found this forum. I probably should start a new thread for my question, but anyway...

I checked with 2 tour operators in HCMC and they both quoted me very differnt prices for the same 1 day trip to Mekong River. Let's just say that one quoted me 50USD/person and another at 10USD/person.

Can anyone advise me on what is the usual tour package prices?

Best regards! Reply to this

Hi Greypolarbear,

You should not break you trip by accepting an offer of 10US$. It sounds cheap but you are not sure about the quality. The package price for your trip is around $50, it is acceptable. Good luck. Reply to this

All of the tour companies ultimatley link back to the same few operators. The majority are merley just agents selling tickets and making a small comission. This includes the "sharks" who keep clogging these forums with adverts!! Most of them will try to imply that they offer a "brilliant guide" or a "better" bus. In reality, the Guides and buses are all organised at the last minute and all the people herded off to the tour. 1 bus will contain people with tickets from anything upto 10 different travel companies.
The up-side of this is that you can easily wander around and do some price comparisons within the city yourself. Don't be fooled into thinking that a company charging $2 more offers 2$
worth of extra service. This type of system is ok(ish) for the smaller 1 day tours, but for anything more than 1 day you should take "Traveladdicted" advice and think about customised tours.

The Mekong question: 50 USD is insanely high for a 1 day tour (even if i was in New York!!). I Would assume that the $50 includes private transport (i.e not with group). For that price, I would also want to see some exceptional extras; way in excess of those offered by the normal tours. Ask them to Specify the "Quality" they talk about, and compare this to the regular tours.
8-10 USD is just about right for the regular 1 day tour.

Cheers

Not going to argue about it. I'm sure they will realise that I am an independant traveller offfering my advice, while you are a SALESMAN trying to make a few dollars. I've put forward ideas and opinions; it's up to people to make up their own minds. Reply to this

I offered my advice and you said QUOTE:"ÿou know nothing in this case". Thats is NOT goodwill; its just plain rude. I stand by every word in my post and offered my opinions in a bid to help other people. The choices they make are up to them, but im totally free to share my advice and experiences. There is no reason why I would lie about the issue; I have nothing to gain or loose!

Hi everyone,

Ok, let's just stop here before the flamewar gets more serious, shall we?

I thank abcvietnam and Dan and Lucy for their advice to my query. Anyway, I was in Ho Chi Minh City a few days after I posted my question in the forum here. Well, and it's a really nice place. Though the traffic is still bustling like any other city, I find the pace very much more relaxed and slowed compared to where I come from.

I managed to book my tour through the hotel at which I was staying, and they arranged for the tour bus to pick us up at the hotel in the morning. And yes, it's still cheaper than USD50 even when the hotel charged us a little more for commission. We were all packed into a larger bus with tourists staying in other hotels. But it's okay. It's much like a one-day Contiki group. Was a pretty good experience to meet people from other countries at the same time visiting Vietnam!

And yeah, USD8-10 is just right for a regular one-day tour package. In fact, if one manages to walk along that street where the tour offices are, you'll find that the prices do not really differ much around that range. Reply to this
