Hey! I went to the USA and the Uk by myself at 19 and was gone for 5 yrs- it was fabulous! prepare yourself for a day or two of feeling homesick and sorry for yourself - but hey, then your adventure is all yours! there are heaps of people out there as well who are doing the same thing (or are sick of their current travelling buddies and need someone else to lighten the mood for a bit) keep an open mind - i know it's a cliche - and say yes alot: you'll never know where you end up! feel free to pick my brains about any of it, anytime! Hi! I've done almost ALL of my traveling on my own so I wouldn't worry about it... Just be safe and use your common sense! I'm 33 now, but when I first started traveling around the US by myself, I was 20. I also lived in the UK for a year at 25 and traveling around Europe alone (which to me was a LOT more daunting because I didn't speak the language half the time). Feel free to contact me with any questions as well - I'll be more than happy to help answer any questions and have been around most of the US. Reply to this

Heya,

I turned 25 while I was in the States + Canada for just over 6 weeks, and I did a majority of it by myself! I met many great people along the way, both travelling and locals/natives. I had a great time and i'm sure i wouldn't have had less of an experience if i had someone by my side all the time. Having said that, it was a great time and if you do ever make it, let me know how u go!

Hello
I’m jess and I’m coming to visit my family who stay in Alaska…..since 5 years I have not met them. I’m so thrilled that I’m going to meet them. I’m a heart patient so the doctor has asked me no to travel. Last year I had an open heart surgery so that’s why my doctor has prohibited me from traveling long distances. Till now I’m under constant observation and medication. I was searching on the net if I can get my medicines in Alaska and I saw that there is an online body on page http://www.drugdelivery.ca/xx-US-02-A-xx/Alaska-Pharmacy.aspx which takes medical orders. I’m happy because it provides all the medicines that I need. Concerning the medical aspect I’m reassured. I’m eager to visit Alaska. Hope it will be just like what I have imagined....it’s been a long time since I have travel. Now, I want to make the best of this trip. Tell me about the interesting places in Alaska and within its vicinity. Tell me about the night life in Alaska.

Thanks for your replies. I am still a bit daunted about how to begin, how I would find work etc. :S Reply to this

How to find work is tough...will you have a work VISA? Know where you're staying? Your best bet might be to check out this site: http://www.bunac.org/uk/workamerica/

they have live/work programs and would be an excellent starting point. I was looking into doing a live/work program in Australia and it all seemed pretty straight forward. They square you away with a work visa and a starting point, then you go and apply for whatever job(s) you want. If you don't have luck finding work, they'll step in and see if they can help.

Other words of comfort might be that it's tough to get lost here, we have excellent roads, free wi-fi almost anywhere you go, and very helpful gas station employees that usually give good directions. We don't have much as far as hostels go to save money on your accommodation.

Check out www.kayak.com for cheap flights or STA travel...they consider you eligible for discounted rates through the age of 25. www.statravel.com AND they're great for providing information about where to go and what to do.
