RIP Big Jay McNeely

He became the act no one wanted to follow during the ‘honkers and shouters’ era of rhythm & blues that preceded rock ‘n’ roll in the late 1940's when the gunslingers of the trade wielded saxophones, not electric guitars. McNeely, ‘The Wild Man of the Saxophone,’ launched sonic assaults while lying on his back, walking the bar or leading a procession out the door, driving his young audiences into a frenzy.
