Places to visit, things to try in New York and surroundings.
Hi all, we are planning a big vacation from Romania to New York and probably surrounding areas (Oyster Bay, The Hamptons etc. - but we will see that later.) At the moment, I would highly appreciate a little help from you guys, regarding any ideas and general comments about what we should include in our trip in New York. Best, but not too expensive restaurants, entertainment parks or events for children (we have two little children), things to see etc. Also, for me is very important to see the Manhattan skyline from the water at least once. Which boat charter companies you would recommend? Thanks a lot for your help.
Reply to this The best way to find out what Travelbloggers have experienced in New York City is to read their blogs. In the bar at the top of the page click on N. America, then United States, then New York, then New York City and all the blogs about New York City are listed. I am flying to NYC tomorrow and plan to visit lower Manhattan to see the area around the World Trade Center Memorial, Wall Street, South Street Seaport, Brooklyn Bridge, etc. I will spend another day in mid-town with Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Central park, Museum of Natural History, Lincoln Center, etc. Have a great trip!
Reply to this In response to: Msg #196662 Hi, this is a question I could write pages about it, but let’s see the most important attractions: Times Square and surrounds probably have great options (restaurants, cinema’s etc). Also The Museum of Natural History worth a try. As for a boat charter company Sailo would be a good option, it is easy and fast, and this way you can also take a tour around the Statue of Liberty.
Reply to this Welcome to Travelblog! As Home and Away mentioned, New York is far to large and varied for a single highlights list. The "best" depends entirely on your interests. Skim the blogs and see what catches your eye. For restaurants, I avoid the chains and get suggestions from people where I stay.
To simply see the lower Manhattan skyline from the water, there's always the Staten Island Ferry. Its not at all fancy, but it shows the harbor and the Statue of Liberty, and its free.
A very limited list of personal favorites:
1. Central Park
2. Museum of Modern Art
3. American Museum of Natural History
4. Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
5. Empire State Building skywalk at dusk
6. Metropolitan Museum of Art
7. FAO Schwarz toy store
8. Rockefeller Center

Reply to this In New York - Time Square and 5th Ave, Empire state building, Museum of Natural history and just walking around is great. Penn station is also surprisingly nice once you go inside. I am not fan of Statue of Liberty, it is famous but long lines and now you cannot go to top anymore.
If you have time to go upstate, checkout Finger Lakes area. It is very beautiful and green, but you will need a car to drive there.
Reply to this You didn't say what month you are going but if you go for July 4th (Independence Day) the fireworks are incredible.
I've read about a place called Nom Wah Tea Palor in Chinatown and I hope to go next time we are in NYC. Supposed to have great dim sum.
