Has anyone had a USA travel visa granted despite conviction???

I was wondering if anyone had had a tourism visa approved for the USA despite having a conviction for assault, more specifically on a police officer :-/

I'd be grateful for feedback and advice.

The circumstances are that 10 years ago my sister was killed in a car crash. This utterly destroyed my mother. She went through a bad time of drinking a lot and on two separate occasions the police were called. She resisted arrest in her drunken state and hit out at the officers (not causing any harm at all). She received a fine and convictions for assaulting a police officer (on two separate occasions). I will be moving to the USA in the next few years as my fiancé is in the US military so I will be going to live in the US with him. The question of whether my mum can visit me if I move to the USA is a huge cloud over my head and I will be anxious until I know for sure. We are extremely close, it will be hard enough to leave her never mind possibly not being able to have her visit.

Has anyone had a tourist visa granted despite a similar conviction?

Hi Kelly,

Welcome to the TravelBlog community!

Sorry to hear of the reason for the current situation, certainly a bitter-sweet dilemma.

You didn't specify whic passport your mother would be travelling on, but just looking on the US Embassy site for NZ;

"The only way to know for sure if your criminal record makes you ineligible is to apply for a visa. Only a consular officer can determine your visa eligibility."

Best of luck with everything.
