Filippo,
Welcome to Travelblog, and the adventure of travel. The "cheapest" car rental place depends on what you want to do with the car. Some local places will rent a high mileage car dirt cheap, but it will be so underpowered it will barely get up San Francisco's hills, and likely to break down in the middle of nowhere. Far better are spending a little more for a high-mileage car from regional chains, which is guaranteed to work and have service numbers in case of problems.

I've had good luck researching discount codes online and using them to get rentals from the national chains. Renting away from the airport will also bring down the rate considerably. Read reviews online, call some places, and see what's out there.

The "best" things to do depends on your interests. What do you like? The usual visitors' list includes a tour of Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, Lombard Street, and Chinatown. I would personally add the Muir Woods redwood grove, a tour of Haight Asbury, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Coit Tower. Read blogs from the area and see what looks appealing. In any case, rent the car after seeing the city, because parking rates are atrocious.

Spending time outside the city is well worth it. Monterrey, to the south, is a beautiful historic town. Big Sur, just beyond it, is one of the best scenic drives in the world.

Good luck with the trip. Looking forward to the blogs. Reply to this

There is no set "cheapest car rental." Any agency may be the cheapest at any time, dependent on dates, routes, etc.

Many things to do in San Francisco like Tour the city by cable car, Escape to Alcatraz, Take in an incredible view, Soak in art for cheap, Enjoy a world record musical etc. Reply to this
