Hi there, australian citizen, just curious if anyone has same issue. In september my partner and i will be going to canada to visit his family. Unfortunqtely majority of the flights go through the usa (?) no desire to go the usa...apparently i need a transit visa....as 18 years ago i went to court and got 60hrs community service...in australia by law we dont even have to disclose this as its spent, but the usa and their hyperactive border security say i need a visa (even if my flight goes over the crap country). In brisbane there is no embassy...so i need to travel to sydney, get 18year old paperwork off the police and get fingerprints done??? Who does the usa think they are? In canada they are more laid back and dont require this crap...the us really should rethink theyre immigration visa policies....no wonder people dont want to go there!
Reply to this Hi Katrina -
You'll find that US border security is as polarizing a topic within the U.S as it is amongst those who wish to travel there. Little will be resolved by disparaging the country in the forums.
However, if you're looking for a way around the system, Air Canada does off a direct flight from Sydney to Toronto (via Vancouver BC) that by-passes the need for a US transit visa.

Reply to this I find your attitude offensive. If your attitude is an indication of your character then the US is correct in not wanting people like you coming here. If Canada lets people like you in than they deserve you.
Reply to this hiya, I am surprised you need to go to that effort as you can apply online. have you tried this and this is what it said to do?
otherwise I agree with the above and try another route. perhaps Cathay pacific via honk kong or Singapore airlines. I'd check out what airlines fly into Vancouver or Toronto and if an Asian one does they probably won't be via the US
