The flight from California to NYC will be about 5 hours. It could take longer if your pet is not on a non stop flight.

Will you be traveling with your pet or are you planning to hire a service to ship your pet and you are not flying?
Each airline has guidelines for traveling with your pet. If it is small they can sometimes go under your seat. You'll have to purchase a pet ticket.
Reply to this We've flown with our cat several times before - the additional pet ticket costs between $125 and $150 depending on the airline. There are also options to freight your animal (such as a large dog) in the cargo hold.
I know of no options for ground transport across the country.
