Any experiences with train travel in USA welcome, most particular the route from Seattle - Los Angeles eg. cost, stops along the way, what can you see from the window??

Has anyone done the Coast Starlight train route with Amtrak (from Seattle to Los Angeles)?
If you have would you please be able to tell me what you thought?
Could you see much from the train, eg scenery and towns?
Did you stop off at any of the towns on the way, if so which would you recommend?
I am going to be travelling by myself and a bit worried about hiring a car, so thought I would try and get an idea about train travel. I really want to see some of the towns between Seattle and Los Angeles and the scenery along the way..

I have not done the starlight train but seem to remember someone doing that last year so I'll try to find their blogs for you. I remember they enjoyed the train and recommended it. I love train travel and would like to make the trip.
I'm certain the scenery would be wonderful as you will pass by scenic forest, valleys and the Pacific coast. This alone would be worth the trip.
If you have the time I'd certainly get off and explore some towns. I would recommend Portland Oregon, Eugene Oregon, Davis California, Santa Barbara California. You could get off in San Jose and take the BART to San Francisco for a few days. A city not to be missed.
