New York Hostels

Looking for personal recommendations.

Hi everyone!

We're looking for recommendations for hostels in New York. We don't mind whether or not we're in the city centre (so long as travelling to it is easy from the hostel), and we don't mind at all whether we end up with a private room or a dorm. We'll be there from the 15th May for two or three nights.

While we're in New York we're going to be incredibly touristy, so we're looking for a good base.

Any ideas, anyone? Hostels in NY seem mightily expensive! Reply to this

Hostels in NYC *are* mightily expensive - and since there are two of you, you'll probably be better off with a private room, maybe even a cheap hotel room in fact. May - August is peak tourist time.

Anywhere on Manhattan south of 86th is a good base. You can get good rates for places on the UWS (Upper West Side) and it's easy to get around on the A or 1 trains.

Brooklyn and Queens can also offer good deals provided you 1) stay close to a subway line and are within 1-2 stops away from Manhattan. Otherwise the commute can get long and you'll spend all your time on the train (30 minutes is perfectly reasonable, as it can take 30 minutes to get from the UES or UWS to downtown touristy places). sorry this is going to be a really unhelpful response as no matter what i cannot remember the name of a really cheap hotel i stayed in right in the middle of the theatre district. It had shared bathrooms (per 2 rooms) so was half backpackers and it was an accident that i booked it as i had my mum with me. Damn, i have even googled and cant find it but it was actually a fantastic location.

But... i would look for a cheap hotel over a hostel in NY or nearly most of the US. Once weekend we managed to get a really famous jazz hotel 'algonquan' for about US$120 on a special. This is a really posh hotel so worth looking for specials and sales. Reply to this

I personally never stayed there but one of my friend was staying for few days at Central Park Hostel for few days. I heard that it was good and near to the subway. I am sorry I don't know the address exactly.

Thanks guys, we appreciate all of your help. We looked at the cheaper end hostels and to be honest, were put off by the awful reviews. They were still expensive hostels (just cheap for New York) and I try to get what I pay for.

In the end we've booked in to a place called 'Bed and Coffee,' which styles itself after a B&B...without the breakfast. It's reasonably priced and I'm sure it'll do us fine! 😊 Reply to this

I tend to prefer bed and breakfast or small boutique hotels for accommodation when travelling. It is worth paying a little bit more money at times, especially in larger cities where the very cheap places can be dire. Reply to this

Looks like a great choice! There are lots of great places to eat close-by and it's well within walking distance to most things. Just to brace expectations - don't be put off if you still see remnants of clean-up efforts on the streets there. That neighborhood in particular was hit very hard by Hurricane Sandy and much was underwater. Things should be mostly turned around by summer though, and goodness knows the business owners will be glad to see tourists return.

Let us know how it goes! Reply to this

In response to: Msg #167104

When you get back let us know how you liked the B & B. We'd love to find some new places to stay in NYC.
