Bonjour Florent! Welcome to Travelblog.

You can travel by airplane from NYC to the Florida Keys by going from the LaGuardia Airport (LGA) to the Key West Airport (EYW). Delta Airlines has a direct flight.

The easiest way to get around is to rent a car at the airport. The airport also has shuttles which can take you to your rental house.

We've never been the Florida Keys, personally, but perhaps someone who has can give you advice on where to stay. Reply to this

I've been to the Keys, although it was many years ago. The upper Keys, which are closer to Miami, are very touristy, and the ones closer to Key West are more rural. The rural keys will provide more relaxation, although much less services.

Key West is the largest town in the Keys and a pretty large resort area. It attracts a large number of gay men.

The keys have a large number of hotels and motels, which should be booked many months in advance. Key West has a large number of Bed and Breakfasts, which can be very atmospheric. Some are either gay men majority or gay exclusive. Since you plan to be there for a week, renting a house or a condo is also a possibility. These should be arranged through a broker; call the Key West Chamber of Commerce and ask for names. Always ask for and check references when using this option.

Hello Florent and welcome to travel blog,

The Florida Keys are marvelous and we have been many, many times. It might help me in making suggestions if I knew the ages of your children.

First off I want to let you know that as lovely as the Florida keys are they do not have many nice "beaches". This is a misconception by a lot of people.

You may want to make your arrangements early as it is a popular tourist destination. Some "resorts" have created beaches and they are pretty nice. There will be plenty of water activities to keep you busy without laying on beaches.

You didn't mention if this was budget travel?

Do any of you scuba dive? Lot of diving and snorkeling in the Keys. I will assume you are not divers for my answer. If you are please let me know and I will add additional information.

It takes about 3 hours to drive the road from Key Largo to Key West. It is a lovely drive and at times you have water on both sides of the highway. Lots of mangrove trees, palm trees and bougainvilla.

The largest towns are Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon and Key West. Each have a different laid back personality. I'm going to add some links of a variety of things that we have enjoyed or can recommend while you are in the area.

In all of these locations it is very easy to rent a waterfront condo.

In Key Largo-

You may want to swim with the dolphins. Because we are scuba divers we have not done this but have been told it is enjoyable.

The rehab center is very nice & educational

In Islamorada-We really like this area. It has great diving.

The Keys are a great place to try hang gliding. It is so much fun.

Another place to swim with the dolphins.

Marathon is one of our favorite towns. Basing your vacation here you cannot go wrong. You may want to go deep sea fishing or just rent a boat and spend the day on the water. This is a great place to take the kids snorkeling or get them scuba certified.

Key West is unique. It has a personality of its own. From ice cream shops and bakeries to fine dining and pubs. Plenty of music fills the air. Museums of sunken treasure to the Hemmingway house. No visit to Key West is complete without a visit to Mallory Square for Sunset. Great place to find boats if you'd rather be on the water for sunset.

They have a cute trolley tour of the town.

One of our favorite places to stay.

I'm sure I'll think of some other suggestions and will write again.
We frequent the Keys and love it.

Reminder-- if you are looking for great beaches you will not find them in the Keys. I can make other suggestions of locations.
