Road trip - month?
11 years ago, September 12th 2012 No: 1 Msg: #160905
Hi folks

I am moving to Vancouver next month and my family are planning on coming out for a road-trip from Vancouver to and around Banff & the likes. My family wanted to come out at the end of next March for my 30th Birthday, but I have done some research and it appears that some areas may not be overly accessible, as there will still be snow on the ground. With that in mind, I was trying to put them off March and getting them to come out in July instead - does anyone have any thoughts on this? Is there a time of year that Banff is more beautiful for example? Are there more activities/sights available in the summer rather than early Spring? When is the best time to spot wildlife?

I would appreciate any opinions/suggestions.

Thanks so much 😊 Reply to this

Hi Carol,

We passed through Banff and Jasper in about early to mid June time and it was spectacular. We were camping and it rained a little bit, but we still managed to get a good few days of sunshine. There was still some deep snow on the ground going up the trail to Peyto Lake (well worth a look) but the roads were fine (we are on a motorbike).  I am sure it is amazing there year round but I think if you went much earlier than May or June you would struggle to walk some of the trails etc.

Make sure you drive down the Icefields Parkway which is the main road between Banff and Jasper. It is only about 200 miles maximum but it took us a full day as we were stopping every five minutes to take photos! We have a few ones as a taster of what you might see on our blog if you are interested.

There are some amazing trails you can walk that take you to some really isolated places.. The trails vary in levels of difficulty but on the whole if you have a sturdy pair of shoes you will be fine... We did them in our trainers!  The park rangers will be able to give you free maps and advice on what to see.

Make sure you have bear spray (you can buy for about 40Dollars a tin) as there is lots of bear activity.

Depending on how much time you have, a trip up the Alcan highway (Alaska to Canada) is also well worth it. That would probably take you a month or so round trip though.

Anyway, hope this helps.

Have fun,

Byron
