Best time to visit the midwest/ east coast?

Need some insight into which is a better time to travel around the midwest and east coast of the United States.

I would go in October because of the chance of snow in Kentucky, but also you'll get to see Fall. FL will not be as hot as it would be in the summer ( a plus if you ask me-FL during the summer can be miserably humid). December is an ideal time to visit FL which is when most people come to visit actually, but it can get windy, however you might run into snow and ice in Louisville. I don't think it snows in St. Louis, but I know it definitely snows in Kentucky. A great source that can help you out is www.weather.com normally has good information on weather around the US, but also talk to your friends as well. Reply to this

FL? Cheap? I guess it depends on where you go in FL because it can be very expensive. The coastal cities tend to be very expensive in regards to everything-I seem to find that everything is cheaper outside of FL. Inland tends to be cheaper (unless you're talking Orlando). But it sounds like that most of the outlet malls Dave and Merry Jo Binkley are mentioning are located on the outskirts (am I right or wrong) of Miami. I'm not sure about Tampa's local economy, however I predict it will be expensive because it is located off the coast and is a popular tourist destination. Reply to this

If only I had the choice of going in October. Now the trip's been planned for the end of December - end of January due to work. That's the only time I can get off work.

Good to know it'll be icy/ snowy in Kentucky. I need to get a good jacket.

As for outlet malls in Florida - I'll just see what I find when I get there! Thanks for all your great tips though - I will definitely keep these tips in mind when I'm trekking through Florida later. :-D Reply to this

Thanks for your advice and well-wishes :-)

Will Doc Martens suffice for ice and snow? Those are the heavist boots I have. I looked on weather.com for the winter forecast and they predict heavy ice in the south-east region.

I think you'll be fine with some warm socks. Reply to this

You want good, heavy boots for the snow so those should be fine. You could always buy ice cleats for your shoes at like an outdoor or department store if necessary-maybe even Amazon.com would have them if you think it's necessary. I've had mixed experiences with mine however I live in MA and the snow and ice are very intense, more so than where you are going to be. I agree with Dave and Merry Jo Binkley just bring really good, warm socks and wear layers. Reply to this

Layers indeed. Will keep the ice cleats in mind if I find it a bit slippery over there.

Here's another Q about transport: will Greyhound be a good way to get around the southern states in January? What happens if Greyhound is delayed due to bad weather?

I like the sound of it because it's cheap and I can see the countryside. Reply to this

Our public transportation system is nothing to others around the world but I think you will be fairly happy with what it offers. There may be some delays in the mountains but in the south you will not encounter many. Reply to this

Could I suggest the train. http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/HomePage

It is a bit faster and much more comfortable. You can get a hop on/off ticket. Reply to this
