Oaxaca travel - has anyone been recently?

Hi Anybody been to Oaxaca recently and can give an uptodate account of how realistic and safe it is to travel in the state? My aim is to visit Monte Alban- I will only go to Oaxaca city if it is necessary as a transport hub. I imagine only the immediate city centre is "no -go". I have been in Mexcio for a few weeks and despite all the press about demonstrations and "tent city" in Mexico City I have visited the capital without any probs. I would really appreciate any up-to-date info...Thanks
