If any of you travelers are headed to Hawaii soon the Honolulu Zoo has new AARDVARKS!
Okay, I know that for the world travelers this is pretty tame, nothing like hiking between Iran and Iraq for instance, but if anyone is coming to Honolulu, Hawaii anytime soon and interested in animals anyway, both the zoo residents and wilder version come to the Honolulu Zoo.
Two new, well new to the Honolulu Zoo, aardvarks just arrived in early May and they are very interesting animals. They are pretty strange and interesting looking, they are the only living member of their Order, they are not common even in Zoos and not very well studied or understood even in our modern world where there are references about practically everything.
Aardvarks are nocturnal and somewhat shy, the best time to see them active is early morning before they settle down for their long daily nap.
As far as non-captive animals in the zoo there is a large population of peacocks, egrets, sometimes plovers and various other wild birds who mingle among the people and captive animals. Guess they figure its a pretty good spot to pick up a free lunch.
Reply to this The Honolulu Zoo is the Mauka 42 acre part of the ~ 300 acre Kapiolani Park. Kapiolani Park itself is just across Kalakaua Ave. from World Famous Waikiki Beach.
Easy access to all.
Aloha
