Here is the
US Visa policy website.
I'm no visa expert, and it seems the rules change every time I look into it, but last I checked, you do not need a Visa with a UK passport to travel in the U.S for up to 90 days. You WILL need an applicable work visa if you want to obtain legal work in the country.
This website could be putting you in touch with under-the-table work that is not filed with the IRS. Technically that type of of work "off the books" would be illegal. Getting compensated with food and accommodation rather than money is probably a legal loophole if the company is in fact legit. If you're looking to pick up odd jobs here and there while you're visiting to extend your travel funds, places like Craigslist might be a better option for you.
