what camera to buy before my trip

I'm going on a trip and I'd like to get a new camera and learn about photography before I leave

I've always been interested in photography, and I think that now is the perfect time to get started so I can hopefully take some good photos and capture the beautiful places that I am going to visit.

I'm particularly interested in film cameras and I'd really appreciate any opinions people have on the following cameras (they're all used cameras as I have a low budget ... as much as I'd love to buy a new pro camera ... )

Here's a list of some film and digital cameras that I've found ...

Nikon F70 Film SLR Body

Nikon EM 35mm SLR w 50mm lens

Nikon F60 - manual

Nikon DSLR D70s

Nikon D80 with MB-D80 Grip

Pentax 35mm K1000

Canon S5is

Canon 30D body

Canon 17-40mm F4L

Canon Rebel XTI

Minolta Maxxum 3xi SLR 35mm Film Camera w/ AF 35-70 lens

So, if anyone knows anything about these cameras or has another suggestion that would be great. Reply to this

Hi Rhianna,

I would seriously suggest that you try for a digital SLR rather than film, the operation costs are so much lower (if you own a computer already) - you get instant results on the LCD screen so will make learning so much faster. (My first SLR was the Nikon D70)

All of the digital SLRs you list are very good - if you stick with either a Nikon or Canon there are no bad choices really. Go for the newest model - if you can afford it.

For travel - I'd suggest getting a body on it's own - any will do - and try to get hold of the 18-200mm Nikkor lens (or canon equivalent) - such a versitile lens and keeps weight down by doing everything that you'd need.

Once you are an expert with SLR, you can go retro and pick up very cheap second hand bodies and lenses - if you find that is the path you wish to follow - or upgrade your digital.

As ever - just my opinion - but I hope it's helpful. Reply to this

Thanks Ali, I guess it doesn't really make sense for a long trip to be using a film camera ... especially because I'm going to be in reallly remote places where I can't even buy film if I run out.

I'm thinking of getting the Canon Rebel XTI. It's not the newest model, but it still seems like a great camera from what I've heard.

Thanks so much for the advice

Hi Rhianna,

The Canon G9 is a fantastic travel camera. It is small enough to fit into a pocket, but produces pictures of the same high quality as chunkier models.
