I never pay much attention to it, but it must be a special day for some because most people here in Germany don't work on 1st May, the shops close and there are parades in the streets. Reply to this

we were in athens on may day - there was a big rally in syntagma square. not sure what they were protesting for though.....

i heard there were massive (violetn) riots in berlin though? Reply to this

Apparently 1st May is considered a day to hold demonstrations about workers rights. With the current world economy problems there was a particularly high level of tension this year on 1st May.

Last year I was in Rome for May Day and the parade was massive - it took about 90 minutes for the stream of people - many carrying blue and white flags - to march past the Colosseum. Reply to this
