I will be cruising Alaska the last week in August, leaving from Seattle. The ports of call are: Glacier Bay, Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan and Victoria Canada. Spoke with a friend recently, who was in Alaska last July, but she was not on a cruise. She mentioned one of her hikes (can't remember exactly where) and said the mosquitoes was so bad, that everyone was required to wear full netting.
I have allergic reactions (not severe) to mosquito bites and was not really planning on any specific hikes. The cruise line has not listed any of the shore excursions as of yet. Are the mosquitoes that bad or was my friend's experience due to the elevations on her hike?
Thanks for any assistance! Can't wait until August!!
Reply to this Hi there, my wife and I visited Alaska last summer (2008) and did a cruise. Mosquitos were bad in land (we did a land tour from Anchorage to Prudhoe Bay before cruising from Anchorage down to Vancouver. I dont recall having mosquito problems on the SE leg of the trip, more north of Anchorage in the marsh lands of Alaska's interior. For a look at what you might see on your trip, take a look at my videos from last year at www.vimeo.com/vk5gr - this includes film of the inside passage, Glacier Bay and also some of what you might expect on a cruise ship.
