Thank you Dent 😊

International Womens Day is the March 8, in case there is anyone who does not know.

Oh, I know! I have already got a huge bunch of flowers, a single red rose and a single red carnation. And it's only 9.20am. I've never really heard of/celebrated Women's Day before....

.....But you gotta love it in Vietnam!!

Happy Women's Day back at you!

Isnt there some kind of world conference that happens today, where women from around the world discuss womens issues in the various countries? If anyone has a news link about it, post it here.

And womens groups in some countries hold demonstrations to fight for their rights today. It can be a sad day in some countries, because the womens groups are intimidated and in certain countries even threatened with prison sentences. In other countries it is a celebration of how far we have come.

I have already got a huge bunch of flowers, a single red rose and a single red carnation.

Sounds like womens day is like Valenties day, where you are. 😊

Yes, it's very much like Valentine's Day, but men give flowers and presents to all the women in their life, not just their wife/girlfriend.

The streets are jam packed with people selling flowers.

So this is a Vietnam thing only? anywhere else?

Nice idea - do the prices of flowers go up tenfold like on valentines 😉 ? Reply to this

Abosolutely not. International womens day is a big deal all over the world. Women can be reluctant to talk about it, for fear of attracting the scorn of others, or maybe for a different reason.

If you are reluctant to express your opinion on womens day and the womens issues you are concerned about, would you tell us what makes you feel reluctant.

If you are a man, what do you think about womens day and womens issues? Do they concern you? Do you worry about what increasing rights for women around the world means for men? I recently read an article that describes how increacing independence of women contributes to depression in men. Apparently they have a need to be needed and more womens rights means that they may be needed less, in some areas at least.

The United Nations formally started celebrating International Women’s Day on March 8 in 1975 (the UN focus this year is on violence against women and girls), yet IWD can be traced back to the labor struggles of women in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The National Women’s History Project explains how women’s history month was built around IWD.

I think the way of celebrating is probably a Vietnam thing. I was aware of it before, but it's not widely recognised in the UK. I couldn't have told you what day it was, or much about it before I came here.

It doesn't seem so much about Women's issues, but more about expressing thanks, health, success and luck to the women in your life. Sort of like a cross between Valentine's Day and Mother's Day.

And I don't know whether the flowers go up in price, I didn't buy any of them! But flowers are so cheap here anyway that I don't expect it makes a lot of difference! Reply to this
