Bombs, flames and mankinis in Tough Guy race

Snow storms, barbed wire and smoke bombs weren't enough to stop thousands taking part in what is deemed the world's toughest race - with one guy wearing a green mankini!

More than 5,000 competitors braved extreme weather to compete in the Staffordshire, England, Tough Guy race - a tortuous 13km obstacle course designed by former Grenadier Guardsman Billy Wilson in 1986.

Here they ran through energy-sapping mud and flames while dodging smoke bombs, barbed wire and electrical charges.

The semi-annual race through manure, ice-cold water, sewer pipes and even more mud, puts paying competitors to the test and asked the question: “Are you tough enough?”

The course is so taxing that, to take part, runners are required to sign a disclaimer which reads: "It's my own bloody fault for being here."

Participants were greeted with extreme weather from fog to sunshine, with the snow making an appearance towards the end of the race.

“From freezing fog to minus 80 windchill, brilliant sunshine came to the rescue for an hour to warm us, then the snow came to cheer us all home”, the Tough Guy website reports.

"Lots of broken legs and limbs. But Tough Guy didn’t kill anyone," the website boasts.

One of the most challenging parts of the race is the world's largest and longest assault course, known affectionately as "The Killing Fields".

The money raised from the event goes towards a horse and donkey charity in the area.

The winner is yet to be announced.
