Getting cameras/lenses cleaned overseas

Should I do it?

Hi there,

I'm traveling for about a year with a Nikon D80 and two lenses (Nikon 18-200mm VR and Tokina 11-16mm). I'm starting to notice some general wear and tear and dirtiness from taking pictures every day in some pretty dirty conditions. Has anyone dealt with having a camera or lens serviced overseas? I'm in Vietnam heading for China / India next.

Thanks a bunch!

Can't say for sure about Vietnam - but in Thailand I had my Nikon serviced - at the Nikon service centre and was very happy with the results.

I'd suggest if you do trust your camera to a service centre choose one listed by Nikon as an official service centre - the turn around was just a few days for me - which was important.

How's the Tokina lens working out for you? Reply to this

Thanks - that's a great suggestion. I'll check the Nikon site.

The Tokina lens is fun, but I've been having some overexposure issues with it and have had to switch to all manual when I use it. I'm really new to wide angle, though, so it's probably just my shooting that needs the work and not the lens. I use my 18-200 90% of the time. I'm working on using Tokina more, though, and am having a lot of fun in the process.

I have the 18-200mm too - awesome lens - I use it 100%!o(MISSING)f the time - only lens 😉

I'm about to get a wide angle... don't know which yet.

Nikon Service Centers Asia Pacific - including a couple in Vietnam and many in China. Reply to this

Thanks very much, again.

I agree about the 18-200! I think it's the perfect all-purpose lens. I bought the Tokina after reading this review from Ken Rockwell. A friend of mine who has the lens loves it, making me all the more certain that I just need to work on my skills. :-)

On an unrelated note, thanks also for starting this great web site. My husband and I started reading the blogs on here a few years ago and it's partially responsible for inspiring our year away from the States (and completely responsible for our decision to blog from the road).
