How much of tax should I expect to pay when staying in a Hostel in NYC?

When I'm browsing Hotels / Hostels on the Internet, it gives you a price which you'd think would be the actual price but in many cases the reviews gives you a different story. In these reviews people says that this is only the amount BEFORE taxes and should expect to pay way more when checking in!

So the question is, how much are these taxes that I should expect to pay when checking in?!

There are several taxes that will added to the stated rate - state sales tax, NYC city sales tax and then the "Hotel Room Occupancy Tax" (hotel tax). When you add them all up, the tax is usually around 18%. If you're looking at booking a room online, the final bill (right before you click to pay) will show you the final tab with taxes and fees included. Even if you don't want to book online, if you go through the process of making a reservation, you can get a better idea of the true final cost.

Keep in mind that almost everything except groceries/food are taxed in the U.S, so you should be sure to ask someone in your hostel/hotel what the city or sales tax is when you arrive so you can better estimate prices while shopping.
