Memory Card Infected with Virus

Found a virus, need help on what to do.

After a week of trying to figure out why the heck pictures were not showing up on a computer when I tried to dowload them from my camera, I discovered that the memory card is infected with a Troyan virus of some sort. Appearantly the only way to deal with the problem is to wipe the whole card-all fine and dandy except that I have some important photos that I want to keep.

Is there any way for me to access and save the photos before wiping the card? Reply to this

Go to a Kodak store. They have a recovery program. I know this as they recovered 4000 photos from 3 USB sticks which all had the trojan virus! I thought I had lost all my photos as the USB were my backups and I'd already started to delete off the memory card. They have the software though so go as soon as you can.

You will then need to format your card to delete the virus but some viruses reactivate each day at a particular time. If I were you I would buy another memory card.

Good luck! Reply to this

Nice tip Claire - do they charge for the service?

I've posted DIY recovery tips in: How to rescue photos from a formatted or damaged memory card.

If you're not in a situation where you either trust the photo shops (and can't find a kodak store) Stop taking photos with the card - and get a new card - use that to take photos.

With the old card - at some point - you will more than likely be able to recover images and remove any viruses. The reactivating of viruses on the card probably indicates that the virus is still active on a computer that you use regularly. Try: Trend Micro Housecall free online virus check. Reply to this

My home computer anti virus program gives me a custom choice of particular drives to check for infections. I use my computer to check my flash drives when I come home from overseas after using internet shops all the time.

Maybe you can remove the virus yourself with a card reader.

I have Clamwin on a couple flash drives, with that free anti virus program I can choose what to scan and that can be the drive you use for the card reader with card in it. I don't open any cards on my computer without first scanning them.

I use Clamwin to scan my flash drives overseas before I plug them in my home computer. I suppose that I could use my flash drive with the Clamwin on it to check the card reader using an internet shop computer.

Might or might not work.

Thanks for the help guys. 😊 I ended up taking the card to a Kodak shop and the owner ran anti-virus and recovery formats for the card. Fortunately, he was able to recover 98% of my pics. I then reformatted my card and got rid of the virus. I will certainly be more careful in the future, although a person is not always able to know if they are using an infected comp. 😊
