Memory Card Problem

Unable to detect photos on computer.

I have a Extreme III compact flash memory card for a Sony Alpha A200 I bought for my trip to SA. Just yesterday I went to a local internet place to download some of my pictures and when I plugged my camera into the computer console with the USB cord the computer would not show any of my pics. The computer detected an external storage device, but when I clicked on it, it showed it as empty--however, on my camera my photos show up just fine when I scroll through manually.

I tried plugging my camera into three different computers, all with the same result. I do not have a button on my card to erace pics, at least that I could see, so nothing was pushed accidentally (besides, they are all still there).

Why am I unable to download my pics? Is there a problem with the card? My other card I used just fine downloading pics the day before, which leads me to wonder if this card is somehow damaged. And if so, is there a way for me to fix the problem?

I would recommend getting and using a second memory card. The Extreme III is quite an expensive brand - so you'll find cheaper ones.

Until you get to access somewhere with reliable computers and skilled staff you can't say how bad things are - or why.

There are a few things to try;

1) Use a usb card reader - by pass the camera - it could be that the camera is playing up.
2) It could be the card - hence a second card will show you that.
3) There is a possibility that the pictures are corrupted (card damage) - more information on how to recover photos here: How to rescue photos from a formatted or damaged memory card.

Don't use the card to either take new photos - and don't format it - until you know what's going on.

Hope that helps. Reply to this

It is most probable that the computers need a driver installed to be able to read images off your memory card. As Ali pointed out, use a card reader to download the images directly (card readers also need driver but they tend to more generic/universal than camera drivers). So don't worry, your pictures are probably fine. Reply to this

I just got to Puerto Iguazu and the computer here is downloading pics off my other card just fine. I have not tried my bigger card yet to see if it works. I think all the computers had drivers installed since they had downloaded my pics fine the day before, but off my smaller card. Both are Extreme III, but the one that is working is 4GB and the one that is not is 8GB.

We will see how the future goes...thanks so much guys for the help. 😊 Reply to this
