From where in Jersey? Are you driving? How fast do you need to get from point A to B?

The Fingerlakes region of NY State is lovely to drive through in summer..although I haven't a clue what it's like in winter. Keep an eye on the weather as you approach Buffalo, they tend to get LOTS of lake-effect snow. Reply to this

Hi. Thanks for your reply. i would like the fastest trip i think, just give myself a day to do it. I will be traveling from Hacketstown which is nr Chester. i would rather not drive and wondered if i could take a train for most of it?
i would love to see the scenery so would rather not fly.
Thanks for the tip re Buffalo.....i am anticipating a very cold trip either way!

I've heard that Amtrak runs trains across NY state, although I've never looked into it. I bet it would be a lovely way to travel. Having a quick look at the map, the train would run up to Albany from the City, then across the state to the west.
Your route would most likely take you from Hackettstown into NY City, then up through NY state to Rochester or Buffalo. (I think the NJ Transit runs the train line through Hackettstown). I would imagine it would be a fairly long day... unfortunately I do not believe there is a train line that cuts directly from NJ across to Niagara.

Good luck!

Thanks. Yes i have found a train that goes from Penn station, so i will get the train from Hacketts town to Penn and then on up to Niagara.
it will be a long trip but great views i suspect!
Its about $55.00 which isnt bad at all (compared to train prices in the UK) so im all set.
Thanks so much for your help.
Take care

I live in Buffalo and we take lots of road trips. I don't think it's a particularly pretty trip unless you go in the fall when the leaves are changing colors.

If you're going in the dead of winter you do need to watch weather reports and I suggest driving because it goes faster that way. I'm not familiar with NJ, but when I drive from Buffalo to NYC it's about 6.5 hours. So to NJ it shouldn't be much more than that. I would plug your destination and point of origin into Mapquest and follow their directions for the shortest route.

I've taken the train from Buffalo to NYC also and it was nice not to have to drive, but the trip was looooonnnngg. Driving yourself would be faster. Reply to this

Hey

thanks for your message. The trip does sound long, and i will go and look into car rental.
Thanks for letting me know about the scenery....i guess on a train you cant stop and take photos either!
6.5 or 7 hours sounds better than 10! It would be nice not to drive, but i will get a quote asap.
Thanks
