i have travelled alot recently in kenya by myself-i am a 25 year old white female- and have never had any problems. obviously you need to take sensible safety precautions like others have mentioned: always take a taxi at night, NEVER walk by yourself-although i have done in the past and was never attacked i wouldnt advise it. once you have used a taxi it is a good idea to take their mobile number and use them again as you know they are safe and reliable. Dont wear expensive jewellery/watches, show ur wallet/wad of cash in public and take a secure bag, preferably with a padlock on it. Avoid walking through slum areas by yourself if u dont know the area and i would avoid the area of nairobi east of river road as it is extremely busy and muggings are rife-i stayed there recently and did not feel too safe! Apart from that, Kenyans are extremely friendly, kind people and you will always find someone willing to help you. I always use my lonely planet guide too-its my bible!! it gives u very honest advice and is really practical when travelling around xxxxx Reply to this

just read the comment about groping- after travelling all over kenya i find i tvery hard to take seriously. Kenyan men are respectful to white women, and i have lived in rural areas far away from nairobi for substantial periods of time and have never been groped or harrassed! Apart from the incessant calls of 'Muzungu' (white person) and 'how are you?' wherever you go you will feel perfectly safe and confident. I feel so safe when I go I am actually considering buying a house in Nakuru! Reply to this

The groping does in fact happen though. It is not specific to Kenya but it does also happen there. It would not be sensible to discount the posibility.

When alone as a women in a foreign country it can be very intimidating...... And then if her honesty is questioned, when she tries to talk about it to others.... Reply to this

i apologise if i sounded disrepectful to any incident where a traveller has been treated inappropriately, i merely wanted to reassure some people on this forum thread (who seem very nervous about travelling to kenya) that if they take the usual safety precautions these untoward incidents are likey to be few and far between-as is also the case in many western countries. No problem Rachel. 😊

I am just being careful, rather than thinking you are doing something wrong. A lot of forum fights start innocently with somebody saying something happened and then somebody else saying they doubt it, then somebody getting defensive..... 😉 Reply to this
