What do travelers think of LA, San Diego, California in general?

I've lived in Los Angeles for three years and see travelers walking around Hollywood with their guide books. I think this city would be very hard to travel and I'm very curious what people think and what they do in this crazy city I call home. California is a great place but it's hard to get around, how do budget travelers do it?
Also, if anyone is traveling here and has questions, let me know and I could suggest a variety of non tourist things to do.

Hi - I'm doing a RTW trip in Dec and will be in LA around beginning Feb 2009...not too sure on the plan yet but have absolutely no idea where to start in LA! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Also - from your comment im wondering if it's not the cheapest of places to get around...and isnt that easy for a backpacker... how many days do you feel would be enough to spend in LA. Im keen to drive from LA to Las Vegas... Reply to this

Santa Monica, Venice Beach ,Hollywood, South Bay gotta get a rental car then drive down to San Diego or better yet do the coast up to San Fran over to Yosimite to Vegas I believe you can catch part of route 66 and follow the immortals like Jack Kerouac, Bono and Jim Morrison into the desert. Sam, Been in LA most of my life. First, Feb is rainy season. It will either be hot or it will rain, be prepared. Second, we have wonderful public transportation now. The Red line runs from the valley to downtown LA, and from downtown you can get all the way south to Long Beach via the Blue line. This is our new subway system. Is affordable and safe. Check out routes and schedules at MTA. We also have trains (Metrolink) that can get you around. LA is huge! It really depends on what you want to see. If your into art then I suggest Pasadena. They have several wonderful museums. If your young and hip (yes I'm old) then Hollywood and the Westside would be fun. Do some research and narrow down what you want to see. Its a big place and require's a little planning, but be prepared to have a blast! Reply to this
