Does anyone know if the Dias de los Muertos festival is something great for a backpacker to check out?
basically another option has come up which would be fantastic fun, but i was planning on arriving Mexico City on 1st Nov for the 2 day festival.
Just wondering if it is a great site to see, or whether it is a family close knit sort of thing- and therefore not something a backpacker should be involved in.... anyone been?
cheers
Reply to this Hi Steve..
well, it really depends on the place you're planning to visit.
I'm from the Yucatan Peninsula, and over here we celebrate it as a family reunion, very intimate.
Reply to this thanks Kleopattra,
yes i get the feeling its very intimate everywhere, and not really something for backpackers to encroach on. We will be in Mex City, so maybe just check out the Zocatalo (the square...cant remember how to spell it).
The alternative is to have a few big nights in LA before coming into Mexico.... su una decisión difícil!
Reply to this I wholeheartedly recommend Patzcuaro for Day of the Dead. No need for backpacking there. Go to search engines and seek info on this special event in a fantastic locale. Very real, local, native and nontouristy. But crowded...!
Reply to this Wow I would love to check that out! I've never considered it before, but I'm adding it to my list of things to see in this lifetime! :D
Reply to this Hey guys, thanks for the advice- we've decided to just spend the day (2nd nov) in Mexico City for the festival, take a look at the altar in the Zocatelo and see whatever it is we see (dont have time unfortunately to head anywhere else for the fest).

Do us a big favor and send a quick post after your visit telling us what you thought...the positives and the parts not so hot! Gracias.
