Cheap places to stay in the USA?

The USA is looking vv expensive! No budget section in the Lonely Planet! Any tips for cheap places to stay whilst doing a road trip from San Fran to New York?

I'm meeting a friend in San Francisco to do a trip to New York over 8 weeks. Not sure exactly where we are going yet or how we are going to travel, we'll plan as we go along.

The issue I'm having is finding cheap places to stay. I've been travelling in South East Asia, Oz and NZ and have been staying in pretty cheap dorms in hostels.

Some of the big cities, San Fran and New York have cheap enough dorms. How cheap can you get motel rooms? Also to get over the jet lag we want to get a twin/double room in San Fran - only for a couple of nights but we can only seem to get a room for about 65 dollors per night, PER PERSON!! That is my entire days budget blown.

Mmmmm my money is not going to go very far in the USA! How on earth do people travel on the cheap there?

Any tips and advice would be very much appreciated.

Hi Jo!

San Francisco is pretty expensive. You could try staying in a motel on the out-skirts of the city, maybe motel 6. I'm from Florida and on my experiences, we don't travel cheap here unless you sleep in your car or stay with friends. If you can't find any dorms/hostels, I would try the low budget motels. Or you could check out couchsurfers.com- a website where travelers offer a place to stay to other travelers. Goodluck, and have fun! I too am visiting New York this summer. Reply to this

Try camping. KOA has campgrounds all over the US. On the home page you can put your starting and ending destinations and it will list all the campgrounds on the way. It's summertime so the weekends will book up quickly. Prices vary. Some even have small cabins as well.

Thanks for your advice everyone, it's been really helpful. Camping is a great idea, I really want to do that during our car hire part. Even thinking of renting an RV if we can find a cheap one. That would be great to get around in. Only issue is going to be driving on the other side of the road. I'm sure that feels normal soon enough though.

I'm booked into the Adelaine hostel and then into a hotel for a few days over the 4th July celebrations. Really looking forward to that.

Thanks again guys. Reply to this

Hello Jo Jo,
I have heard from several friends traveling within the US and abroad that couchsurfing.org is great. Check it out. May your journey be delightful. Also check out hosteling international. Reply to this
