Im heading to California in the next month for a 6 week vacation. I am starting in San Fran and plan to head down the coast to San Diego before returning to San Fran. I will be hiring a car to drive northbound through death valley and vegas and Yosemite etc. Please can someone tell me if its worth hiring a car to drive south down the coast or is it easier/cheaper to use the buses. If you book in advance, probably flight will be the cheapest if you are alone! But if your aim is not just transportation but visiting places - then I would suggest rent a car... and drive through hwy-1 with a lot of stops in Big Sur and Ventura area..

Dear Traveler,

Renting a car is always key... but with all the hassles with gas prices and summertime traffic mash-ups... why not take the train. The Surfliner by Amtrack is absolutely wonderful. It's coastal for the majority and lets you off in Oakland. For a cheaper fare than gas, you can relax and enjoy the scenery all around you. The train also goes where no other vehicles can, as if you are heading back in time.

Sincerely,
