I fly into LA from Fuji and four weeks later i fly out of New York. Think we want to stop off at Las Vegas, Grand Canyon and maybe Chicago. Can anyone offer any advice? Reply to this

I'd rent a car in LA, drive to the Grand Canyon, passing through Las Vegas. After you see the Grand Canyon, consider seeing Sedona-- you won't regret it. After that, it's going to be a long, very tedious drive through very drab country to get to Chicago.

I'd try to find a low cost flight from Phoenix to Chicago. From there, I'd fly to New York instead of doing the two day drive. However, it would be a fun drive to jump up into Canada, see Toronto and then head to NYC via Boston.

Google maps (maps.google.com) is a really good tool for driving in the US. Reply to this

Las Vegas is very nice, but don't spend too much time there. Better go to Death Valley (you need to leave very early to go there). It's very hot and dry in Las Vegas.
The Grand Canyon is awesome! Take some good hiking shoes with you and discover the canyon!
Chicago is a nice place to visit, you can do a lot of things! The windy city, so be aware of it!
Though about San Francisco????? I love this city, it's probably one of the MUST to see in the US! It's worth seeing!

I think driving is more fun than flying and you discover great places. As long as you are over 25 (I think) and more than 1 person, it won't be a problem to rent a car......
Enjoy your trip!

Greetings

LA to Las Vegas is roughly a 5 hour drive. Could be a little longer though if you get on some of the wrong freeways. LA is horrible to drive in and around. If you hit rush hour traffic, it could add a few hours to the drive. If you leave LA on a weekday morning, you would be in good shape though. Avoid leaving LA in the afternoon on weekdays.

Salt Lake City is a long drive from Las Vegas. It's about 420 miles.

It's 688 miles from LA to Salt Lake City - http://maps.yahoo.com/dd_result?newaddr=&taddr=&csz=Los+Angeles%!C(MISSING)+CA&country=us&tcsz=Salt+Lake+City%!C(MISSING)+UT&tcountry=us

Renting a car should not be a problem if you have a major credit card. I'm not sure if you need to show your countries drivers license though. Being 23 though will incur, at most car rental agencies, an extra charge. 25 years old is the magic age for car rentals it seems. If you have a major platinum credit card, call them up and see if they cover car rental insurance overseas. When I rent a car over here, I don't have to purchase the insurance since my card covers me... not sure if that would work in your case. Reply to this

I would rent a car in LA and spend most of my time sight seeing. For me, the best benefit of flying is the added time in other locations and the hassle of driving is gone. I would drive the entire trip except going to Chicago. I would fly. Very long drive.
