Tepui. These tabletop mountains are characteristic of the terrain from the Orinoco east in this part of Venezuela. Much of the voyage has been through flat land, but we are now entering a more mountainous region.

Heading off on a sidetrip to a small community. Lucho and Natalia made many of these trips -- to visit, keep up contacts, and to buy provisions for the trip. Part of their travel philosophy is to support the small local communities by buying provisions from them when possible.

Many of the smallest communities are well hidden -- up small streams that would be impossible for a stranger to find.
