Overlooking the Nazca Lines
We chose to view the lines from the Tower... cheaper than flying. Peru has been a real highlight for us, this is the South America you imagine, the people are rich in history and colour. We have found it a lot cheaper that Chile & Argentina and the people speak Spanish slower so we´re almost able to understand them!
Nasca
From Lima we travelled South by bus through the desert to Nazca. Nazca is famous for mysterious lines and pictures drawn in the Desert over an area of 500sq kms. The strange thing about these lines is that you can only actually see them from the air so it remains a mystery as to why & how they were drawn. We chose not to fly over the lines but got to see them from the observation tower.
Arequipa
This is a great city, the architecture is colonial, streets are cobbled and crowded and the only traffic on the roads are little yellow taxis.
Lake Titicaca
We ascended in altitude to the world highest navigable lake at 3800m. Felt a bit dizzy when we arrived due to the altitude so we took it easy at first.
We booked ourselves on a tour of the floating islands which were amazing to see.
In the Nazca Desert
Relaxing enjoying the sun from a view point for the Nazca Lines. The Uros people live on these islands made only of reeds. They continuosly add new reeds to the top of their floating island so it is pretty spongy underfoot. The islands they take the tourists to have become a bit commercialised but it is still a unique and interesting experience.
From the floating islands we continued for 3 hrs by boat to the island of Amantani where we spent a night with a local family in their home.
They have no electricity or running water, they were subsistence farmers and all cooking was done on a fire by candle light. There were 6 children in the family and it was quite a struggle to remember everyone´s name. They didn´t speak English either so our spanish-english dictionery came in handy! In the evening we were dressed in traditional clothing and attended a fiesta.
It was a great experience but we were very glad to get back to our hostal for a hot shower!
Cusco - Machupicchu
We chose to take the easy route to the famous Machupicchu Ruins... through the Sacred valley and then on the train to the ruins. Machupicchu lived up to and beyond our expectations. We got
Arequipa Market
The colours in Peru are amazing. up to the lost Inca city at 6am and it was totally covered in mist. As we went through the ruins with our guide the mist slowly began to lift and revealed a scene which just got more and more beautiful as the day progressed. The Incas were amazing builders and this lost city is a mystical place.
We fly back to Lima tomorrow (26 May) and then on to Venuzuela for some warmer weather and a chance to relax on Carribean beach!
