Hey everyone, we hope you´re all well and enjoying our regular updates. Here´s the latest from Peru.......
Day 50 of 180 and we arrived in Puerto Maldonaldo, the gateway to the Amazon Rainforest!!! Arriving at our lodgings we were pleasantly surprised - porchside hammocks, warm showers and mosquitos nets protecting us from the ever increasing termite nest and solitary cockraoch.....
Anyway, to the jungle itself. There were many fascinating walks and long-boat rides throughout the 3 days that took us to within touching distance of birds (particularly parrots), butterflies, caymans, piranhas and lizards, but the highlight was watching hundreds of monkeys swinging from tree to tree a la Tarzan!! A real ´getting back to nature´experience with more David Attenborough moments....
After arriving back in Cusco we headed onto Arequipa, the stop-off town for the Colca canyon - the worlds deepest at more than 1200m!! The canyon is also home to many condors that circle around the deepest point. After 30 minutes of patient waiting we were finally graced with the presence of 10 condors, each measuring 2.5m wide, flying past and over our heads - truly unbelievable!!
That night, back at the town of Chivay, we were
entertained by Andean music and folkloric dancing in a local restaurant. Yet again we were dragged onto the floor to shake our thangs in front of the crowds...
Moving further down south to Puno we took a boat to the floating islands on Lake Titicaca - the worlds largest high altitude lake and a mere 284m deep!! Visiting these islands, which are huge rafts made of reed, was another fantastic experience. To see the self sufficient Aymaran communities maintaining traditions, living happily and still thriving was both amazing and overwhelming.
As we now leave this colourful country behind us, we can both say that the landscapes, people and culture of Peru have made it our most favourite so far.
The next and last update from South America will come from Bolivia after we visit the Salt Lakes of Uyuni and the Attacama Desert.
Lots of love, take care and keep the comments coming as they keep us amused and it gives us a boost, as believe it or not we really do miss YOU. Nate & Anna XXXXX
